Re: RoC Asphalt Mod Schedule
2012 Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour Dates Released.
BINGHAMTON, NY…The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour will launch their 19th annual series with an eleven race schedule that will certainly be exciting for both spectators and the teams following the respected Modified trail. Shangri La II Speedway in Tioga Center, NY will play a big role on the RoC tour this year with three sanctioned events including the 75 lap opener on Sunday, May 20th.
Once again the highlight of the tour will be the 62nd running of the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200 on Saturday, July 21st at Oswego Speedway. The traditional event pays over $10,000 to the race winner and always sees the top Modified talent in the northeast at the 5/8th mile oval. In addition to the RoC, Oswego Speedway will host the tour again on Saturday, May 26th with the traditional 75 lap event.
The tour will see a two day western, New York swing on Friday, June 8th at Spencer Speedway and Saturday, June 9th at the Dunn Tire Raceway Park. The two day events is always a must see for asphalt Modified fans as they get to see the RoC stars go wheel to wheel on back to back days. For the Pennsylvania and New Jersey teams and fans this makes for an ideal weekend to travel for two big events. Both of these races will serve as 75 lappers as well. The rich Modified history at both of these facilities certainly will help make for a great weekend of racing.
Saturday, June 30th will see the return of the RoC Tour to the Holland Speedway with a 100 lap special event. Series Director Andrew Harpell will take the reigns of the event at the popular facility in a co-promotion with the Bennett family in what should prove to be an exciting return.
The month of July will feature two RoC Tour events including the 62nd RoC 200 at Oswego Speedway and a return to the Shangri La II Speedway on Sunday, July 29th. Both facilities are quickly emerging as two of the up and coming operations in the region. The Oswego Speedway facility went through a huge transformation in 2011 and the concrete surface at Shangri La II has become very racy with improvements continually ongoing.
The Chemung Speedrome will once again be part of the RoC Tour with their traditional August date. The Friday, August 10th 125 lap event is always a very popular event on the tour as the race typically comes down to the very last lap. This will be the only tour event in August with both Dunn Tire and Shangri La II hosting non touring Modified events that month as well.
September will serve as the championship month for the tour with two big events. The Annual “U.S. Open will take place on Sunday, September 16th at the Dunn Tire Raceway Park and the “Fall Brawl” at Shangri La II Speedway will decide the 2012 Champion on Sunday, September 23rd. Both events will serve as 100 lap races. The Wall Township Speedway in New Jersey will also once again host an RoC Tour event with a date to be finalized in the days to come.
In November it was announced that the RoC Tour would go through a few subtle and exciting changes for the 2012 season. The 2 barrel Modified teams will be invited to compete on the tour with a $500 bonus being posted to the top finisher within each race. In addition a separate tour 2 barrel Modified Champion will be crowned and awarded a distinct bonus. Recently 2011 Tour Champion Chuck Hossfeld commented, “We welcome the changes and will work extremely hard to defend our title in 2012.”
RoC Tour Director Andrew Harpell remarked, “We are very excited about the upcoming season and the subtle changes we are making will only enhance our existing program.” In addition he said, “In a soft economy there have been so many positive things going on within the NYS asphalt facilities that many really have missed.” “When you look at the new pavement put in place at Spencer Speedway just a couple of years ago along with the birth of a brand new facility in the Shangri La II Speedway. Last year Oswego Speedway saw a number of impressive upgrades and the Chemung Speedrome continues to be one of the most modern facilities in the region with their Musco Lighting and fantastic grandstand viewing area.”
The Race of Champions will have a booth in this upcoming weekends Motorsports Race Car & Trade show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. Defending Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200 race winner Zane Zeiner will have his Modified as part of the booth display. We will also have a display on March 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the annual Binghamton Area Mall Show at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, NY. Series reps. will be on hand at the traditional Motorsports Expo at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY on March 10th and 11th.
